Beyond the coconut trees are kilometers of ricefields. Beyond the palm trees, 50 kilometers distant, is the Pacific Ocean.
This faces east. To the north is the large freshwater lake called “Laguna de Bay.” It was fairly pristine up to the early-1990s. Today, unfortunately, it is polluted with tons of antibiotics and pesticides — dangerous runoffs that have changed its ecosystem.
These seven shots were taken from the balcony of my parents’ resthouse in Calauan, Laguna. The air is clear, the night sky is dark, and the smell is fresh. A breeze is almost guaranteed to pass at night.
These seven shots were taken within 120 seconds. The colors changed that rapidly. This was taken near Kilometer 69, along the National Highway, in mid-2015.

Calauan (Ka la wan) is in the inland province of Laguna, near Manila (100 kilometers), in the big island of Luzon.
